The Bard’s Tale is coming to the OUYA! inXile confirmed it on Reddit.
With the original Bard’s Tale I had my first ever encounter with RPGs on a C64 in 1986. So for me personally this game is the grandfather of all RPGs.
The high-resolution version I tested on my Galaxy S2 looks really amazing, even on the big screen. It downloads a total of 3.5 GB of data, so you know, where the awesome graphics comes from! The game uses the 3D ISO “Dark Alliance” engine with a similar camera and control scheme. The controls on mobile platforms are the only disadvantage I found, a point wich is of no relevance on the OUYA. With the OUYA release I finally get some free space back on my mobile. ;-)
During your quest you encounter more than 50 enemy types and over a dozen bosses. You tame dragons, fight big bosses and free princesses. Sadly you don’t have a party to support you on your journey in this modern interpretation of the original Bard’s Tale. The looting was axed too. If you find loot, it goes straight into your inventory as money.
Still the characters are hilarious, and the Bard is a sarcastic, opportunistic individual who is just interested in coin and cleavage. The dialogs are very well-written and ooze with wicked humor. You have the choice to be polite or snarky, a choice which can affect how the NPCs deal with you, and what they tell you. Some of these decisions affect later events.
In the beginning you customize your skill points. The talent system lets you add various perks and as you gain experience from completing quests, you will level up and get more talents and skill points.
The in-game scenery is really amazing. In fact the graphics is one of the best so far in mobile gaming.
If you still have second thoughts about the Bard, there are song and dance numbers in the game. Many of them!
The Bard’s Tale is really captivating. The story goes down to the wire and the dialogs are absolutely hilarious! During the 20-30 hours of gameplay you’ll never feel bored. Promised!
But be warned! This is not a game for in between times. It can have strong addictive effects on weak gamer minds.
