Retro Full Throttle!

When you’re somewhat like me you grew up with cartoons on Saturday mornings. I just loved watching those cool cartoons from Japan or the US.

Turns out there are some guys that do not just loving those old cartoons but think it would be a great idea to turn this love into a video game.

Saturday Morning RPG is the result and it is extremely funny!

You play an average guy that receives magical powers to transform any regular object into a weapon. The style is sort of like one of those old-school Japanese RPGs combined with a more Westerner’s appeal.

The concept is pretty conventional but interesting at the same time. You explore an area, encounter enemies and collect new items. The quest on the other hand are quite different in the respect that in one quest you have to collect smurf-like creature for an alligator (?) to eat or stop illegal downloading from computers in a cave.

That definitely puts a new twist on the regular “hunt and gather” quests that we’ve come to hate.

Conclusion

The game idea is brilliant. The graphics are very well done and everything seems to click for the first few hours.

Unfortunately the game is pretty repetitive and only the story keeps you going after you’ve defeated your first few hundred lizard men. Even though these mini-bosses are extremely funny (a warthog riding a pink cat/dog hybrid….)

It is still worth a trial run for the free episode and maybe you’ll actually like it. Be prepared for getting laughed at by your girlfriend because you tap the screen/hit buttons like a maniac to increase your ‘starpower’. ;)

Due to that love for video games that has developed very early Tim also knows why older games very successful despite mediocre graphics. One simple reason: gameplay. Tim feels that with the development of the OUYA and the stronger focus on indie game studios is the right step towards better gaming experiences that rely more heavily on unique game concepts and better gameplay in general.
